Personalized Gift Card Printing Kiosk
Build-A-Bear Workshops is an international retailer with over 200 locations in the US and Canada and additional franchise locations in ten countries. Each workshop location creates a fun filled world for customers to design, create, and build a customized stuffed animal. From selecting an animal, to stuffing it, to naming it and receiving a birth certificate, each step of the process gives the customer a personalized experience.
Build-A-Bear faces a challenge in selling its gift cards in a place where customization and personalization are an integral part of the customer experience. In most retail environments customers pick a pre-printed gift card from a hangtag display. Build-A-Bear wanted to improve this buying experience for its guests. In addition, it wanted a way to speed up the buying process by incorporating self-service technology.
To address these issues, Build-A-Bear (BAB) worked with the software development company Nanonation to create the world's first personalized, on-demand gift card printing station. Prior to the kiosks being developed, all gift card sales were processed at the same counter as all other purchases, leading to longer lines during peak times like the holiday season.
The custom gift card kiosks offers both a personalized experience and product offering, as well as a way to speed up transaction times, while decreasing wait times. The kiosks enable users to select the customized card background, specify the value they want to add to the card, and print the card on-demand while they wait. A preview feature allows the user to see exactly what the card will look like when printed. The station uses a specialty printer to print directly onto a blank gift card and encode the magnetic stripe.
